The Eyebrows I’ve Always Wanted, and I Get to Keep Them – Semi-Permanent Makeup Works its Magic.

If the eyes are the windows of the soul, surely the eyebrows are the frames of the windows, and my frames were looking a little sketchy lately. Brows thin as we age and I’m guilty of over-plucking years ago, but drawing them on each day is not something I’m willing to sign up to. What if there was a magic wand that could give me perfect eyebrows and add definition to my face, without resorting to an arsenal of products? Turns out there is, and it’s called semi-permanent makeup.
I figured the Tunbridge Wells Laser & Skin Clinic had chosen carefully in selecting Jorgie Vickers to be their associate practitioner in this specialty. It’s both a science and an art to apply pigments into the dermal layer of the skin, and I needed someone I could trust with sharp needles who also had a good eye for colour, balance and proportion. During our consultation at the Clinic she proved to have the knowledge and experience I was looking for, and I knew Jorgie was my girl.
My dream was a stronger arch and increased brow length, while retaining a natural look. Jorgie suggested individual hair strokes placed closely together, after running through the gamut of other options such as widely-spaced strokes or a powder effect. We also discussed colour options, and she suggested that as my skin tends to turn everything warm it would be prudent to add a dash of ashy tone as a counterbalance. I was in good hands, and before I left she did the patch test that’s required at least 24 hours in advance.
We booked two hours for the treatment and it starts with the application of numbing cream, which quickly becomes your best friend. Natural pigments are carefully applied within the skin by a small needle, and since they’re pure, hypo-allergenic and fragrance free there’s actually less chance of reaction than with topical cosmetics. With the first pass along the brow bone it felt like some serious scratching, and the phrase “beauty is pain” came to mind. But Jorgie immediately applied more numbing cream and after that it was a piece of cake.
She stopped at each juncture to show me the progress and consult further before proceeding. I was able to relay my wish list as we went along while she focused on the individual character of each side . Considering this lasts about a year and a half I definitely wanted to know it would be perfect, and her precise work ensured it was.
When we were all done my brows looked dramatic with the gorgeous sweeping shape I’d requested. I had already been informed that they start out much darker then they end up, as the treated area firms up over the course of a week and the top layer sloughs off. You have to be willing to embrace a bit of a high-fashion exaggerated look for five or six days and promise not to pick at them, but after that you’re left with the brows of your dreams. What a luxury, my super-sensitive skin was perfectly happy, I wake up with the improved brow shape I’ve always wished for, and they won’t wash off. That’s a magic wand worth waving!
